New Year, New Beginnings

Me, at a friend's holiday party

Writer’s block? Blogger burn-out? Hmmm…

Writer’s block wouldn’t even begin to explain why I’ve been completely Missing In Action over the course of the last month. True, it’s holiday season and many bloggers tend to take a step back from their blogs to focus on “Real Life” – family, friends, and loved ones. While the same was absolutely true to a certain extent for *this* blogger, there are a few other reasons why I’ve been a bit distant of late. Not to worry, dear reader, all is well in terms of health, wellness, and mental sanity. This holiday season was very different for me in a very personal way.

At the tail end of 2010 I made a pretty big decision – one that, while it significantly affected other people in my life, was entirely about me. The past month has been a whirlwind, almost like a dream! I feel as though more changes have occurred for me over the last four weeks than I’ve experienced in the past four years. Funny how life happens like that sometimes! I don’t mean to make this sound like a sad post, because while part of what’s happened is upsetting, it’s also very exciting at the same time. I’ve closed a chapter of my life – one which I will always look back on with a smile, but one that I’ve outgrown and needed to let go. I’m so lucky to have the best girlfriends in the whole world and an amazing family who supports me through any and everything.

That said, I have a very exciting year ahead of me – one bound to be filled with lots of new adventures, starting with an indefinitely-long (one way ticket, much?) trip to California. I’m so ready. Say it with me now…

Goodbye 2010, hello 2011!

Sometimes the best way to make a new start is to take drastic changes. I think a one way ticket to California would qualify. It is exciting and will be an adventure. Being on your own without any of your prior life there is a very freeing experience and will help you explore who you are and who you want to be. I did something similar when I graduated from college and wouldn’t trade the experience for anything: oldest child, lived at home during college and never went anywhere, graduated, joined the Peace Corps and went to the other side of the world. It is very different just being YOU and not surrounded by role expectations you have lived with for years.
    Explore, enjoy, and grow.

Inspiring post! And good luck on your endeavors.. I made a similar journey at your age and haven’t regretted it since.. left NY, left boyfriend, best friends and family behind.. but it was the best decision of my life! Don’t be afraid to take your life by the horns and live it to your fullest desires. Cheers to you!

What a lovely picture. Although I’m a Texas writer, my home is California. I love this state. We’re accepting of everybody, we have great senators, and we have the most sensible gun laws of any of the 50 states. You’ll love it here.

  12. I have heard of so many writers with no energy to write these past few weeks – is there a Big Plan by some non-reader somewhere to stop writers from writing I wonder? So many posts on Facebook & Twitter saying the same thing about not having any inspiration / motivation etc (and I include myself!)
Let’s hope a bit of sunshine will wake up the Muse…. except by then I shall be wanting to sort out my very sorry-looking garden! *laugh*
Wishing you all the best for the New Year!

  13. I’m with you Allie…so long 2010, don’t let the door hit you in the ass!!! And bring on a rockin’ 2011!! You know, sometimes moving on with your life starts with goodbye…at least that’s what Carrie Underwood says :) But, it’ so true! I applaud your strength and just know that you will succeed in whatever path you choose.

I just hope your travels will find you back in NY at the end of May, so we can finally meet, that would be killer!

    Love ya girl!

  14. Chiming in a bit late — as saying goodbye to 2010 has taken a bit longer for me than I’d hoped it would! Let’s just say the darn door hit my ass! Embrace the changes, Allie. If not now, when? And from where I sit … enjoy all that sunshine!

In the end you HAVE to do what is best for you even if it hurts to get there. If I could wish one thing for you Allie it would just be for you to be genuinely happy. Not a lot of people find that in this life and I think you really deserve it. You are a loving, smart, and very courageous woman let nothing hold you back it is your future and you have to go for it. Much love.
