The Sunday Salon: Week in Review, and Unwinding with The Tudors Tonight

Happy Sunday everyone! I’ve had a busy weekend so today is more of a “week in review” Salon. If any of you missed the Stephanie Cowell event hosted by myself and my partners in crime over at the HFBRT, do be sure to check in! We’d love it if you would visit, take a look around, leave us a comment… :)

As for my own posts from the event, I posted my review of Claude & Camille with GIVEAWAY, a guest post by Stephanie Cowell, and a special post with video clips from a Claude & Camille reading I attended on publication day, where I also got to meet the author.

This week I also posted a new “Fairy Tales in Fashion Photography” feature, this time showing off Sleeping Beauty in all her splendor. Click here to take a look and weigh in with your thoughts!

I announced the winners of two giveaways this past weekend, and CLARE, if you are reading this, please e-mail me at HistFicChick (at) gmail (dot) com so I can get your mailing info and have the publisher send you your copy of Our Hart: Elegy for a Concubine. Thanks!!

So something fun to look forward to tonight…The Tudors is back on Showtime at 9pm! I’m having dinner and drinks with a girlfriend so I’ll be recording it on DVR for when I get back to my apartment, to torture my boyfriend with. I say that with tongue-in-cheek. Ron enjoys some period films (what guy doesn’t enjoy epic battle scenes?) and I can usually get him to watch The Tudors with me so long as I promise not to kill it by screeching “BUT IT DIDN’T HAPPEN LIKE THAT IN HISTORY!” at the television screen every 10 minutes. Since my review of the series this past summer, I have come to accept the fact that there are many historical inaccuracies meant for simply entertainment. The only aspect that I just can’t get past is when history is changed to the point where the original story is actually more interesting than the invented stuff! Le sigh…this season should be plenty entertaining though, historically accurate or not. Henry takes on his 5th and 6th wives, Kathryn Howard and Catherine Parr, and there is plenty of drama that surrounded those marriages to make for a great final season!

The Queen’s Pawn
by Christy English

Synopsis: “A historical novel of the legendary Eleanor of Aquitaine and the one person she loved more than power-her rival for the throne.

At only nine, Princess Alais of France is sent to live in England until she is of age to wed Prince Richard, son of King Henry II and Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine. Alais is an innocent pawn on the chessboard of dynastic marriage, her betrothal intended to broker an uneasy truce between the nations.

Estranged from her husband, Eleanor sees a kindred spirit in this determined young girl. She embraces Alais as a daughter, teaching the princess what it takes to be a woman of power in a world of men. But as Alais grows to maturity and develops ambitions of her own, Eleanor begins to see her as a threat-and their love for each other becomes overshadowed by their bitter rivalry, dark betrayals, conflicting passions, and a battle for revenge over the throne of England itself.”

  1. Have fun at dinner tonight! I am also really looking forward to The Tudors tonight, I am sure it will be inaccurately awesome :) Have a great week!!!

  2. Clare says:

Thanks for reminding me! I've e-mailed you.

  3. I don't get Showtime, so I caught up with the 1st 2 seasons on Netflix. But I can't do it anymore. It's like watching a train wreck. The historical inaccuracies are only exacerabated by the truly dreadful acting. I'll stick to writing about the REAL Tudors for now …which reminds me: did you see the ad for WOLF HALL in yesterday's NY Times Book Review section. The header was "Meet the Real Tudors," which I thought was kind of funny, since as much as I adored WH, it's still historical fiction. But "Meet the real Tudors" is what I've been saying about my nf "Royal" series for years now.If you want to watch a truly GOOD TV series about Henry VIII and his wives, rent the 1970s BBC series with the brilliant (and appropriately cast) Keith Michell as the king. The woman who plays Kathryn Howard is miscast (too old, and homely!), but the rest of the cast is perfect.
