As I previously announced in a 2010 period film roundup, Ironclad is set to release later on this year. According to IMdB:

It is the year 1215 and the rebel barons of England have forced their despised King John to put his royal seal to the Magna Carta, a noble, seminal document that upheld the rights of free-men. Yet within months of pledging himself to the great charter, the King reneged on his word and assembled a mercenary army on the south coast of England with the intention of bringing the barons and the country back under his tyrannical rule. Barring his way stood the mighty Rochester castle, a place that would become the symbol of the rebel’s momentous struggle for justice and freedom.

One of the leads, Katie Mara (who plays Lady Isabel), went to my high school. She’s been in a lot of great movies like We Are Marshall, Shooter, and Brokeback Mountain, among others. Some of you might recognize her from 24, and she recently had a role in this past season’s Entourage playing E’s assistant. Watch out for her in the upcoming Iron Man 2. By the looks of the trailer, I would assume they are referring to John’s wife Isabel (actually spelled Ysabel), not William Marshal’s wife Isabel de Clare. Ironclad looks like it should be a great movie. It is especially appealing to me after reading Elizabeth Chadwick’s The Scarlet Lion!

Looks like a realistic period piece. Don't know if I can handle 2 hours of bloody fighting. I've still not made it past the first 15 minutes of BRAVEHEART.

SInce it is set in England I will brave the gore for the story. however, tt looks like a good couch movie where I don't feel guilty avoiding watching the battle scenes.

That's so cool that someone that went to your school is in the movie. I can't say that about anyone I have went to school with. Looks like an interesting film.

I can't wait for this one. I really only like period movies so its been a while since I actually went and saw one!

  5. Nina says:

Nice clip. I cant wait to see this movie.

Nice, I'll have to keep a look out for this one! We had such a detailed view of this period in The Scarlet Lion.

  7. This could be fun! I've written extensively about John and Isabelle of Angouleme (shewouldn't have been Ysabel, since she was French — but that's Hollywood for you!). So it will be interesting to see what the screenwriters did to history! :) Actually, both of John's wives were Isabels. His first, a cousin, Isabella of Gloucester, was an heiress and the couple was not permitted by the bishop (whose arm was twisted to wed them) to consummate their marriage, or even to live together, because they were too closely related.

I am really looking forward to this one. The previews just put you in the middle of the action. Not so much Robin Hood though. I'll wait for the DVD.
